Pennethorne's Cafe Bar | Our Man on the Ground
Not only can you enjoy some ice skating in London this Christmas at Somerset House but you can also pay a visit to this iconic building’s latest resident, Sir James Pennethorne, well the new Cafe Bar that just opened at the end of November that is named after the 19th century architect who was responsible for the design of Somerset House’s New Wing, which fittingly is where this new cafe bar is located.
The inspiration for the Cafe Bar and its menu has come from Pennethorne’s European travels during his Grand Tour of Paris, Parma, Bologna, Rome and other Italian cities such as Florence and Genoa. Head Chef Richard Robinson has therefore created dishes that embody the best of French and Italian cuisine with a modern British twist.
Open for breakfast at 8:00am you can enjoy freshly baked specialist breads including a Banana Bread and Bacon Brioche as well as pastries from the in-house bakery. The all-day small plates are ideal for sharing, along with some of the finest artisan coffees from the brew bar as well as craft beers and a great selection of French Italian and English wines. Each month a new coffee will be featured so you can experience different flavours from around the world. This month for example, the coffee comes from Guatemala Antigua and has a sweet sugary syrup taste with a tinge of lemon acidity.
At lunchtime you can enjoy a selection off salads, sandwiches and tempting desserts with prices starting at £5.25. Come dinner time there is a choice of toast, salads, meats, cheeses and puddings.
Don’t worry if you don’t have time to stay and eat though, as Pennethorne’s also offer a take-away service for their excellent coffee, six signature breads and pastries.
We will be putting Pennethorne’s to the test in the next week, so you can expect to see a full review on OMOTG very soon.
Open Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 10:00pm; Saturday from 10:00am to 10:00pm.
