Pennethorne's Cafe Bar | Mutual Attraction
Our new favourite is Pennethorne’s Café Bar at Somerset House. Ideally located in the heart of London you’re onto a winner right away with plenty of tubes and transport nearby – guys, remember we ladies like to wear heels!
Somerset House itself has such a wonderful array of ever changing exhibitions (a fashion show was on whilst we were there) there is always something new to see.
Pennethorne’s is tucked away in the newly refurbished ‘New Wing’ and is a beautiful venue that is both small enough to be intimate but spacious enough to not feel hemmed in or claustrophobic. We’ve all been on those dates where you feel like you’re on a double date with the couple on the next table, not here fortunately.
Small plates of delicious food to graze on
Dinner can be intimidating on a first date and a little ‘forced’. But if you’re meeting after work, some nibbles are a must to go with that wine. Pennethorne’s ethos towards food is serving up small plates of deliciousness, no big fish and chips, lovely small bites you can share (or not!).
The Nduja on toast and crispy curly kale and ham hock salad were both demolished in record time! Of course, we know you will all be far more refined than we were! The selection of meats and cheese is ideal to share on a date and the perfect pairing to one of the fabulous cocktails on offer. The Nutty Martini attracting my eye! Next time though I shall be sure to opt for the wine flight, something I love to indulge in when over in the States where it’s quite the norm to enjoy a wine flight and I’m pleased to see they are making their way to UK bars.
The selection of wines and bubbles on offer is small but impressive so even if you don’t know your Chablis from your Riesling you’ll easily pick a delicious wine so no need to fake the ‘wine buff knowledge’!
Perfect ambience for a relaxed date
Pennethorne’s has a wonderfully unique presence. It is relaxed yet still maintains a sophisticated air without being too casual or pretentious. The staff were fantastic, there was no rush and when they saw we were deep in conversation, left us to it.
Pennethorne's is ideal for a first date or for a weekday ‘chilled date’ with a touch of class.
Looking around the café bar it would be hard to think of a better location to wind down and get to know your date over a glass of wine. Not too busy, not too noisy and without too much going on inside so you can focus on one person – your date!
