Sometimes you don’t need to eat a full meal to enjoy a glass of wine. At Somerset House’s new establishment Pennethorne’s, you can sip expertly mixed cocktails such as the Corretto Martini (one for the coffee lovers) and the Quince Old Fashioned – both strong but delicious – and sample their meat and cheese platters. It’s not advisable to go here if you want something hearty (although the mushrooms on toast are a winner – they’re soaked in madeira wine), but it evokes a feeling of being on the continent and watching the world go by. Bask in the elegant surroundings of Somerset House and then maybe head over to the ice rink for some festive skating.
