One of our favourite things to do when we are lucky enough to find ourselves with a free day in London is peruse the ever inspiring walls of Somerset House. Somerset House is renowned for its many regular and equally brilliant exhibitions. The choice of gallery space on offer makes it quite easy, as a visitor, to find that having arrived quite early in the morning, you’ve sailed right through until close without taking in all there is to see.

When embarking on day long cultural endeavours like these a little pick-me-up can be quite the saviour for your weary legs and tired eyes. It is at this point that we raise a glass in thanks to Pennethorne’s, situated in the grand New Wing, designed by architect Sir James Pennethorne in the 19th century and to whom the cafe bar owes it’s name.

Pennethorne’s remains reminiscent of the arts, culture and style of the era. With an added 21st century nuance Pennethorne’s feels incredibly modern and fashionable; which is exactly how we like to imagine ourselves to be as we treat ourselves to a cheeky lunchtime tipple.

Of course, you may not succumb to alcohol so easily as we, so for those who don’t fancy a liquid lunch there’s plenty on offer to tantalise your tastebuds.

The menu features delicious sharing boards as well as small plates of salads and potted meats. At the heart of the menu is the evening drinks menu and with a stunning outside terrace, Pennethorne’s is the perfect venue to relax and unwind with a cocktail.
